This hotwork permit:
A hotwork permit is a written authorisation to perform hotwork operations in a designated area. The permit is valid for a specific period of time and activity.
The permit typically outlines precautions such as fire watch personnel, fire extinguishers, proper ventilation and inspections before and after the work. The hotwork permit is a critical part of risk management and is used to ensure compliance with safety regulations and protect both workers and property from fire hazards.
It is the responsibility of the permit holder to follow all safety procedures and to ensure that the work area is properly ventilated.
A hotwork permit is required whenever hotwork is performed to ensure the safety of employees and the public. Hotwork is any work that involves the use of tools or equipment that produces heat, sparks, or flames. This includes welding, soldering, brazing, cutting, grinding and any other work that produces a spark or flame.
A hotwork permit must be completed before any hotwork can be performed. The permit must be obtained by the person who will be performing the work and must be kept on-site while the work is being performed. The permit must be signed by the permit holder and authoriser.
Note: Legislation requires a person conducting a business or undertaking to prevent the possibility of fire or explosion from an ignition source.
Additional Note: A hotwork permit is not required when the hotwork operation is being performed in an area that is already designated as a hotwork area e.g. a welding fabrication workshop.
