The following are requirements that relate to the safe use of portable ladders and must be adhered to:

  • The ladder must be manufactured for industrial use.
  • The ladder must be set up on firm, stable and level ground.
  • The ladder must only be used for that which it was designed.
  • The ladder must be checked before use to ensure that it is in good condition.
  • All the locking devices on the ladder must be in place.
  • The worker’s body must remain within the space between the sides of the ladder while performing work.
  • Three points of substantial contact must always be maintained while performing work on a ladder.

Ladder Inspections and Maintenance

Ladders must be regularly inspected by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Ladders with any of the following faults must be replaced or repaired:

  • Fibreglass stiles cracked, chipped or severely faded with fibers exposed.
  • Timber stiles warped, splintered, cracked or bruised.
  • Metal stiles twisted, bent, kinked, crushed or with cracked welds or damaged feet.
  • Rungs, steps, treads, or top plates are missing.
  • Worn, damaged, or loose tie rods.
  • Missing, broken or loose ropes, braces, or brackets.
  • Timber members that are covered with opaque paint or other treatment that could disguise faults in the timber.
  • Missing, loose, bent, or worn fasteners, i.e. rivets, bolts, and pins worn or damaged feet, including worn non-slip material.

Stepladder Safe Use

When using a stepladder to perform work the following must be adhered to:

  • It shall only be used in the fully open and locked position.
  • It must be manufactured of a non-conductive material if used to perform electrical work.
